Game News

With the weather turning snowy, The King William have decided to cancel the game planned for tonight. The games at The White Horse and The British Legion are definitely ON. That's the only confirmed news I have so far. I am assuming the games are ON unless noted otherwise.

On a sadder note, The Salutation have dropped out of the league after last nights game. With this pub following the Luckwell out of the league in quick succession it means we are running far fewer games a week than we were before Christmas.

With numbers also being dramatically lower at some of other other long established venues such as The Fire Engine and The King Billy where once 3 or 4 table games are now only getting 1 or 2 tables it is probable that the prize fund which was dramtically upped from £750 to £1000 last year may have to go back to something like the level it was, to ensure the league does not start to run at a loss.

With a prize fund of £1000 to be given away every monthly final, 18 Bristol Blue Glass trophies to be bought for the 18 league winners, the monthly champion trophy, the six monthly champion of champions trophy, Royal flush card guards, Tournament Donkey Cards, new tables, and new cards all to be paid for the league is not cheap to run. We would like to point out that we have been consistantly been giving away more than ANY other league in the country, including the national poker leagues since we began.

The Champions Poker League boasts of having a prize fund of a maximum of £2250 at their finals from a prize pool created over 12 weeks, from all the games they have. The Bristol Poker League gives away over £4000 in the same period from around 17 venues!

A reduction in prize money isn't definite at this stage as newer venues such as The White Horse, Snooker City, The Clyde and The Rose and Crown are all generating good numbers, but I am bringing the situation to light now as it is something that is becoming more of a concern.

Hopefully people who used to play at venues no longer in the league will play at other venues and boost their numbers up a bit and the situation will be ok.

Edit - The prize fund has now been changed with immediate effect. The combination of snow, lost games and dropping numbers of players has meant that the income has now dropped below the outgoings. Not a good way to run any business!
